Guide yarn weights
From delicate lace to chunky bulky yarn, every weight has its ideal projects. This guide helps you choose the right yarn to get started on the right foot.
Lace & Fingering — Very fine yarns
The most delicate yarns of all. Lace weight is reserved for openwork knitting and intricate lace patterns; Fingering (also known as 4 ply) is slightly thicker and better suited to a first fine-yarn project. These yarns require patience and very thin needles.
- Needles: 1.5 – 2.5 mm
- Great for: lace, socks, openwork shawls, lightweight summer garments
- Level: intermediate to advanced
Sport & DK — Fine to medium-fine yarns
Sport and DK (Double Knitting) are the all-rounders of the yarn world, and hugely popular across Europe. Neither too fine nor too thick, they produce a beautiful result for lightweight garments and baby accessories.
- Needles: 3.5 – 4.5 mm
- Great for: lightweight jumpers, baby knitwear, accessories, transitional-season garments
- Level: confident beginner
Worsted — The standard weight
The go-to yarn weight, found in the vast majority of beginner tutorials. Easy to work with, it grows quickly on the needles and is forgiving of small tension mistakes. An excellent starting point.
- Needles: 4.5 – 5.5 mm
- Great for: jumpers, scarves, hats, bags
- Level: beginner
Aran — Medium-heavy weight
The traditional yarn for classic Irish cable-knit jumpers. Aran produces well-structured, warm, and sturdy knitwear. It's our top pick for a first jumper: it works up quickly and the result looks stunning.
- Needles: 5 – 6 mm
- Great for: structured jumpers, cables, cardigans, blankets
- Level: beginner
Bulky — Thick yarn
A voluminous yarn that grows before your eyes — perfect for impatient knitters! In just a few evenings, a cosy scarf or warm hat takes shape. Ideal for keeping motivation high when you're just starting out.
- Needles: 6 – 9 mm
- Great for: chunky scarves, hats, cowls, blankets
- Level: complete beginner
Super Bulky / Jumbo — Extra thick yarns
The chunkiest yarns of all — sometimes knitted with your arms! A Super Bulky blanket can be finished in a single evening. Worth noting: these yarns are not well suited to wearable garments, which can become very heavy.
- Needles: 10 mm and above
- Great for: blankets, home décor, arm knitting
- Level: complete beginner

Good to know: every ball of yarn has a label indicating the yarn weight and recommended needle size. When in doubt, always follow the label rather than guessing from the look of the yarn. Tension varies from one knitter to the next — it's always worth knitting a small tension swatch before starting a project.
