19 enchanting knitting patterns, Katinka Sarjanoja & Meri Mort

Each of the 19 patterns is accompanied by a poem — a spell, a charm — designed to awaken the power that lies dormant within every knitter and to pass it on, through the stitches, to the person who will wear the garment.

These texts draw their inspiration from Finnish folk music: in the past, healers and seers were often called singers. These traditional rhymes and spells invite you to refocus your mind and cultivate a true state of mindfulness.

Behind this unique project are two complementary authors: Meri Mort, a yoga teacher and writer, and Katinka Sarjanoja, a knitwear designer. Together, they have created a distinctive collection, rooted in the world of mysticism and folklore.

Knitting as the art of care

Those who knit know it well: there is something meditative about the movement of the needles. When the mind settles on the yarn and the stitches, time takes on a different texture.

And when you knit for someone you love, it’s something else entirely. Memories of paths travelled together slip into a pair of socks; a pair of mittens to give away absorbs all the tenderness one feels for the hands they will warm; a shawl knitted for a parent carries within it gratitude for a gentle, sheltered childhood.

But magic can also be knitted for oneself. The stitches of the Serpent Socks can be imbued with courage in the face of change; the Mourning Socks can accompany a process of inner healing; and the cheerful Yoga Socks invite you to explore your relationship with joy.

This book is to be read, felt and knitted at your own pace, according to what resonates within you. Let the magic work.
